“You can’t take this seriously.” I make my viewers see the message beyond the joke. I tell my stories with satiric forms and caustic visual one-liners. I am not always funny, but am always sincere. By creating perilously funny images, I want you to laugh at what you see and then cry a little. I am a fiber artist who specializes in the Japanese form of weaving called Saori. Saori is a philosophy more than a technique, focusing on improvisation and spontaneity. Before training as a weaver, my focus was digital art pieces using hypertext. Both mediums have been strong foundations for satiric memoirs. Why fiber? Weaving fabric attaches me to my canvas physically and mentally. Like life, my process is surprisingly improvised. Decisions are made as the shuttle moves across the threads.
When stuck between projects -- fiber purgatory -- I weave bolts and bolts of fabric, a form of calisthenics before getting ready for the big game. Making my own materials strengthens and personalizes my projects.
