“In this series, I wanted to explore how art-- in a chaotic world that is hyperconnected though technology, yet, on a human level, feels so disconnected-- can allow us to re-connect to our inner selves and to others in a deep, peaceful and meaningful way.  I wanted to explore the power of images to heal ourselves.” Lori Markman

Lori Markman’s Magical Landscapes offers viewers a welcome respite from the continual daily barrage of current events. Begun during the global pandemic-the series is a response to the ongoing negative social, political, and global conditions coupled with the need for harmonious human connection and goodwill. Inspired by the harmony, tranquility and balance of traditional Japanese landscape art, these landscape collages are seductive in their serenity, yet playful spatially. Completely contemporary, yet providing a satisfying connection to history, tradition and the meditative, spiritual qualities of nature, Markman’s art invites the viewer to find magic and peace within themselves.

Markman begins with an ordinary landscape image that resonates with her. Guided by sensitivity, flow and imagination, that image becomes a springboard to create an entirely different landscape. Using a variety of materials including pencil, paint, text. greeting cards, Japanese prints and other collected papers, she creates a magical place of illogical scenery, in space that is both definite and ambiguous. By ostensibly looking outside at the quiet landscape, Markman mines a contemplative and meditative world that rewards deep looking.
