Mashaheer is an exhibition featuring eighteen new paintings by the artist Maryam Amiryani. Mashaheer refers to a rare type of Persian carpet that depicts notable people. Inspired by her family's own Mashaheer carpet, Amiryani creates a series of paintings in which notable Western celebrities are reinterpreted through oil paint thus combining both elements of Western and Eastern culture.
Maryam Amiryani was born in Shiraz, Iran in 1967. Following the Iranian Revolution in 1979, Amiryani and her family relocated to Paris, France. After moving to the United States several years later she obtained her BFA in Graphic Design from the Art Center College of Design and a MFA in painting from the New York Academy of Art, she also holds a BS in Asian History from Georgetown University. She currently lives and works in Marfa, Texas.
