In November Partners Gallery is presenting the photo and wood constructions of Virginia Stearns, celebrating the individuality of trees.
For years Stearns has found herself photographing trees. In combining these photographs with boxes or branches, she focuses on presenting each tree’s uniqueness and individuality, rooted for a lifetime to one particular location. Each bears witness in its form the story of a life with its shape, its strength and beauty, its scars, burn marks, lichen and moss growth, its will to survive the attacks or pamperings of humans, insects and other animals and the work of storm winds, droughts, floods, heat and cold.
This exhibition is a tribute with great admiration to these beautiful beings and models for a life of determination and adaptability.
The show opens November 9 and continues through December 4 with a Second Saturday meet the Artist, November 11 from 5-7pm.
The gallery is located at 45062 Ukiah St in Mendocino. Winter hours are Thursday through Monday 11 to 4pm. Closed Thanksgiving.
Artist:
Stearns' major focus over the last 25 years has been on Nature and the Environment from sculptures of natural wood forms, oversized fabric compost detrivores and marine invertebrates, and tongue-in-cheek climate change scenarios. She has also examined animal mutualism in Nature and animal (including human) sexual strategies. Works engaged in the environment include a floating wildlife island and driftwood bird perches in the tidal channel where she lives in a houseboat in San Francisco.
