British artist EMILY YOUNG (b.1951) is the leading free-carving sculptor in stone of her generation. This exhibition of more than 25 new works includes heads whose powerful features emerge from stones including marble, onyx, alabaster, serpentine and lapis lazuli. She chose ‘pareidolia’ for the title as it means the appearance of something known in something essentially different and distinct. For Young, the starting point is the actual uncut material; looking closely at the natural formations in and on the surface of the stone, she is guided to choose how to proceed into it in search of a form. “When I look at the stone I know what it is… I look for the sense of its age and quietness and its stillness.” Stone itself is the teacher.
Emily Young’s sculpture is held in private and public collections worldwide. Her work has been exhibited internationally in museums, including the J. Paul Getty Museum, California; the Imperial War Museum, London; the Whitworth, Manchester; the Meijer Sculpture Gardens, Grand Rapids; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Thirsk Hall, Yorkshire.
• The exhibition is presented by Richard Green, in association with Willoughby Gerrish Ltd.
