Keeping Warm Together

Photography

17 January – 7 March 2015

The increasing heterogeneity of urban society in socio-economic, ethnic and cultural terms, places new demands on our “ambivalent toleance” and our ability to live in a mode of urban indifference, that means, to consider everything in our environment with a certain equal-validity.

The exhibition Keeping Warm Together plays with the social implications of architecture and shows, from photos of Berlin facades, constructed image series of rows of houses with fictitious social mix. The reference to different life worlds behind the facades of the images becomes a symbol of a hybrid culture.

About the artists

Friederike van Lawick and Hans Müller have been artistically working together since 1990. Through photography and digital processes they create series of images around the core theme of identity and its complexity.

Highlights of their exhibition activity were participations in exhibitions in the Fondation Cartier, the Museé du Louvre and the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris and also a solo exhibition in the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne. Their works were also exhibited at the photo festivals in Arles, Groningen, Nice and Braga.

Works of LawickMüller can be found in museums in Stuttgart, Paris, Lausanne and in important private collections. In 2013 they realised a poster intervention in a Berlin subway station as part of the project series Kunst im Untergrund. Works of LawickMüller were recently shown (June-September 2014) in the much-noticed exhibition UNKNOWN: Pictures of Strangers at the Transformer Station in Cleveland, USA.
