Sun Valley, ID – [June 17 - July 26, 2024] – Gilman Contemporary presents SINK/RISE, acclaimed Photographer Nick Brandt’s third chapter of his ongoing series the “The Day May Break.” Previous chapters depicted people and animals affected by environmental destruction in Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Bolivia. Shot in camera underwater off the coast of the Fijian Islands, SINK/RISE features powerful portraits of South Pacific Islanders facing the detrimental consequences of rising waters.
Taking the viewer on an underwater odyssey across ten large-scale photographs, SINK/RISE continues Brandt’s exploration of the environmental adversities facing both human and animal life. Brandt extends an invitation to contemplate our relationship with the natural world, showcasing the fragile beauty of the Fijian Islands juxtaposed against the looming specter of submersion. Even though submerged in water, Brandt’s subjects do not float or swim, instead they pose as they might on land. In each image Brandt asks- “Can we show that we care about the humans and animals and trees that we will never live to see?”
Each photograph is a testament to Brandt’s unparalleled ability to connect with his subjects on a profoundly personal level, channeling this connection into a compelling call to environmental action. Zoe Lescaze eloquently writes in the foreword to the book Sink/Rise: The Day May Break Chapter Three - “The photographs comprising SINK / RISE are remarkable in their ability to be simultaneously approachable and enigmatic, to be political and inclusive. They invite us to linger, to look harder, and to go deeper. With every return, there is something new to discover— within the images or within us.”
The artist will further illuminate his creative process and the ethos behind SINK/RISE during a speaking engagement at The Community Library in Ketchum, ID, on July 11.

Nick Brandt (b. 1964) is an English photographer whose themes relate to the disappearing natural world, before much of it is destroyed by mankind. His current work, SINK/RISE, is the third chapter in the series, The Day May Break which he began in 2021. SINK/RISE focuses on South Pacific Islanders impacted by rising oceans. The people in these photos, photographed underwater in the ocean off the coast of the Fijian islands, are representatives of the many people whose homes, land and livelihoods will be lost in the coming decades as the water rises.
Brandt devoted his photographic career to showing the disappearing natural world in East Africa. Beginning in 2001, he photographed a trilogy of works, charting the progress of paradise to diminished reality. From 2016-2019 he created a series of epic panoramas recoridng the impact of man in places where animals used to roam, but no longer do.
Brandt has had solo gallery and museum shows around the world, including New York, London, Berlin, Stockholm, Paris and Los Angeles. Born and raised in England, he now lives in the southern Californian mountains. He is co-founder of Big Life Foundation, fighting to protect the animals and ecosystem of a large area of Kenya and Tanzania.
