All are invited to join us at Sparks Gallery at 11:30 am on Sunday June 29th for a casual coffee conversation with Southern California mixed-media artist and educator, Kathleen Kane-Murrell and explore her latest exhibition, Chasing Shadows. Kathleen is a charm of the Californian art world and has dedicated herself to education and the cultivation of art, establishing the award- winning children’s art program, Fine Artists™. She will be discussing her journey of creation and inspirations, particularly for her exhibition Chasing Shadows which is showing at Sparks Gallery in the Gaslamp District until July 6th. Inspired by a childhood memory of Peter Pan, Kathleen Kane-Murrell’s Chasing Shadows explores the ephemeral nature of light and form. Using suspended plexiglass, she creates layered, shifting compositions where shadows become an integral part of the artwork—always present yet often overlooked. In a fast-paced world that demands quick judgments, Kane-Murrell invites viewers to slow down, engage in deep looking, and discover the quiet beauty in the fleeting. Her work is a meditation on time, transformation, and renewal, offering a space for contemplation and discovery.

Through color, texture, and high touch surfaces, Kane-Murrell’s work focuses on an abstract response to the human experience. She often uses classroom detritus in her mixed media work.
Her lifelong interest in art, education, and the creative process has nurtured three careers. After graduating with a degree in marketing from San Diego State University, she worked as a corporate trainer and manager. In 1990, she translated corporate skills into an award- winning children’s art program, Fine Artists™.
Kane-Murrell’s professional art career began in 2007. She has exhibited throughout San Diego and Southern California, including solo shows in Liberty Station, Ray Street Arts District, Japanese Friendship Garden Museum, and Sophie’s Gallery. She has juried in the Oceanside Museum of Art, Cannon Gallery, San Diego Art Institute and La Jolla Athenaeum. Her work is in personal collections throughout the United States, Japan, and Singapore.
“My work is abstractly narrative. I aim between spontaneous and controlled. Influences include art history, travel, music, and literature. Patinas of layered mark-making reflect my perception of light, color, and sound. When a viewer reaches to touch my work to understand what is seen, I have achieved an elusive goal.”
