Shooting Gallery Project Space Presents: "Blue Skies" New Works by Brian Mashburn

Shooting Gallery Project Space is pleased to present Blue Skies, featuring nine extensively layered oil paintings by Brian Mashburn, all framed in stained Poplar by the artist. The opening reception will be Saturday, November 9, from 7-11 pm, and the exhibition is free and open to the public for viewing through December 7, 2013.

Known for darker, chaotic landscapes, Blue Skies is a departure from the artist’s previous subject matter. With an emphasis on an upward perspective, Mashburn has created a series of atmospheric work where luminous skies stretch out indefinitely. There is a marked absence of human presence, only interrupted by the occasional glimpse of a fog covered city relegated to the far bottom of the canvas while sweeping skies carry the eye upward.

In almost all of his work, Mashburn directs viewers’ attention to a central focal point of soothing blues. These areas of clear sky act as a counterpoint to the more ominous visuals of barren branches and rain-shadowed cumulus clouds. A soft, diffused light rakes across the surfaces, capturing each scene in the afterglow of a receding storm.
