GR gallery is pleased to announce KEIKAI, a solo exhibition by Shoko Nakazawa, marking the artist’s debut with the gallery. The exhibition invites visitors into the vibrant world of the Japanese artist, presenting a suite of new works, including oil paintings, drawings and hand painted polystone sculptures. The series is inspired by Shoko signature Kaiju characters, rendered in a new bright, shock-fluo color palette for this occasion.
On the day after the opening we will host an event for the release of new soft vinyl limited edition toys, with the artist offering a signature session.
From an early age, Nakazawa developed a fascination with insects, fantastical creatures, and monsters. Her visual universe merges cuteness and ferocity, featuring pastel-colored monsters that evoke a world where fear turns playful.
Through her work, she explores the emotional and captivating side of Kaiju, transforming the notion of “monster” into a friendly and symbolic creature, balanced between pop art and ecological narrative.
The opening reception will take place on Friday, November 21st, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm (Exhibition Dates: Nov. 22nd – Dec. 28th ). Nakazawa’s compositions exist in a timeless realm, evoking a sense of nostalgia. They are traditionally executed in a vintage style, characterized by textured discoloration and populated by cheerful yet melancholic young girls alongside mysterious, recurring creatures that often interact with one another. These figures are Nakazawa’s own interpretation of kaiju—the “strange beasts” of Japanese culture and mythology, known from the science fiction genre that includes icons like Godzilla and King Kong. Specifically, they include Byron, the giant salamander; Seedlas Brother, the pre-evolution form of Byron; and Tokke, the gecko monster. Together, they embody a fusion of decadence, desire, and entropy, balanced through their symbiosis with nature.
For Keikai, Shoko Nakazawa shifted her focus primarily to these characters and, as the title suggests, adopted a particularly vivid and intense palette—one that mirrors the disquiet of our times
Artist:
Shoko Nakazawa (b. 1972) lives and works in Tokyo. She frequently exhibits with Kaikai Kiki Gallery in Tokyo, where she recently took part in the exhibition “Animal Forest” during the fall of 2025. In 2021, she held a solo show at Rotofugi Gallery in Chicago, IL, followed by another in 2022 at Hidari Zingaro in Tokyo. That same year, she participated in the exhibition “Manga Heroes. From Osamu Tezuka to Pokémon” at Fabbrica del Vapore in Milan, where her works were presented alongside leading figures in Japanese manga and visual culture. Her exhibition activity has expanded to contemporary art fairs across Asia, including Art Jakarta and ART OnO, positioning her work among the most closely followed emerging voices on the international scene. Graduated at Joshibi University of Art and Design, over the years Nakazawa has received numerous awards and recognitions at the Design Toys Awards and collaborated with brands such as Beams and Milkboy, achieving significant popularity and recognition as a successful example at the intersection of urban art and fashion.
