“Zwischenraum,” from the German, means the space between two objects. But that literal definition does not capture the nuance and complexity that imbues the word with a deeper significance: That “space between” can be filled with tension, confusion, longing, disdain, or many other metaphysical states, and it is also physically undefined, meaning it can be a great distance or a minuscule gap, which could either be filled to overflowing or entirely devoid.

The distance between us, and the landscape we’ve shaped to support our society, is a remarkable field that can only be felt when we view those landscapes, as Heinser has, from above and at a great distance, side-by-side with how we typically view ourselves as human beings – up close and quite personal.

Artist ( Description ):

Born in the Ruhrgebiet, Germany and based in San Francisco, California, Thomas Heinser combines the precision of a commercial photographer and the specificity of a fine artist to his portraits of people and aerial photographs of intentional and unintentional man-made landscapes. He studied at the Fachhochschule and Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf, with Joseph Beuys at the helm.  He has had solo exhibitions at Gallery 16 and Goethe Institute, San Francisco, Haus 1, Berlin, Kunst Haus Lempertz, Köln and the Museum Voswinckelshof, Dinslaken, Germany.
