CK Contemporary is pleased to present A Simple Story, its second solo exhibition with American painter Jamie Perry, featuring a series of acrylic paintings on canvas. The exhibition will open on Saturday, November 19th with a public reception attended by the artist from 5-8 pm, and will be on view through December 17th.

In A Simple Story, Jamie Perry continues to explore the imagery that is central to his visual vocabulary. We see a man lost in thought as he stares at an abstract painting, a woman standing in a driveway with a suitcase while her face lies just outside of the composition and a lone farmhouse set on the prairie under a dramatic sky. Each piece is infused with the endless possibilities found in the vastness of everyday life. Perry leaves us a visual handle to hold onto and invites us to enter the piece not just as a viewer but also as a participant, filling in the details of the stories who’s framework he has built.

Drawing from a wealth of influences including Edward Hopper and Maynard Dixon, Perry has worked to reduce his artwork to the most basic components. Perry says, “Most of my paintings are comprised of two main elements…light and space. A solitary subject illuminated on a vast plane of darkness invites the viewer to feel a sense of isolation, but at the same time, warmth and safety.” These powerful works engage the viewer at a personal level while striking a visual and philosophical balance. This balance informs and reflects the simple stories that we all have to tell.

Artist ( Description ):

Jamie Perry (American, b. 1962)

Jamie Perry’s simple compositions and minimal, yet striking imagery are the foundation of his work. Inspired by artists like Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer, Maynard Dixon and Andrew Wyeth, he aims to celebrate the forgotten icons of Americana. Though his paintings often have a cinematic or narrative feeling, he strives to create a story using as few details as possible, often stripping down the painting to an almost composite abstraction, and then using light, space, and atmosphere to build it back up. He states that, “my paintings are pictorial reflections of images and experiences of the past, where viewers can be transcended to a time and place where life was simple and unobstructed.”

He is well-known for his artwork depicting a solitary figure confronting the world before them. A recurring motif in his work is the act of looking at art, and in a clever twist, Perry makes the art audience part of his compositions. He is also well-known for his expansive landscapes, capturing the great American frontier. This setting allows Perry to strip his compositions down to the basic elements of architecture, land, and sky. He describes his landscapes, explaining that, “an open road leading to a vanishing point symbolizes the future, and the journey that we all take to get there”. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions and can be found in many prestigious collections. He is largely self taught, although he developed his portfolio at the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Perry currently lives and works in Riverside, California.
