New York, NY. Porter Contemporary presents The Price of Everything, a solo exhibition of new works by Jennie Barrese opening with an artist reception on Thursday, November 21, 2013 from 6:30 – 8:30 PM.

“Sometimes we come to a place in our lives where we must burn everything to the ground.  There comes an energy that takes root inside of us, grows slowly and devours parts of what we once were.   It is simply unavoidable.  We must either throw gas on the fire or smolder and gradually break under its heat.  We must be reborn.” says Jennie Barrese.

“The Price of Everything” explores the journey of a shift from a long-standing stable archetype in one’s life to a state of complete uncertainty and change. Barrese manifests this change by shifting from photography to painting in her third solo exhibition with Porter Contemporary. For Barrese, the journey was about questioning everything that she knew -- her role as a women in society, as a wife, as a daughter, as a friend, and especially as an artist.

Through exploring her emotional shifts, Barrese has created a series of surreal paintings of unknown worlds that appear malleable at first but contain a sense of architectural structure and rigidity. Barrese’s return to painting allows her to reconnect with her art on a more tangible and tactile level leaving the ethereal and digitally generated photography behind. Barrese concludes “Everything was becoming visceral.  On a journey such as this, you sometimes end up where you started, at the core of who you are, climbing out of the dirt and mud to pick a new road to travel down.”

“The Price of Everything” will be on view at Porter Contemporary through Saturday, January 4, 2014 when the artist will present a talk and poetry reading related to her works.

Artist ( Description ):

Jennie Barrese, until now has worked primarily as a photographer but has recently shifted to painting using oil and gouache.  Her work tends to explore strange surrealist creatures and landscapes.  Barrese also experiments with painting surfaces, often using finishes that give the look of more architectural elements such as plaster, vintage wallpaper and peeling walls versus traditional surfaces.

Through both photography and painting Barrese’s themes tie very closely to the artist’s experiences and her work is often intensely personal.

Jennie was born in Scranton, PA and received a BFA in Fine Art Photography from Syracuse University, in Syracuse NY.  She lives and works in Brooklyn NY.

Venue ( Address ):
