The Air Between examines a thin line between personal and collective narratives, their formation, and their mutual influence through abstract paintings and ceramics. In this three-person show, artists look at the intersections of the self – whether through race, gender, or sexuality – questioning how the individual affects the collective and vice versa.
In Maria Loram’s installation A Brief Convocation, the multitude of tiny vases, allude to the collective nature of the self, examining the multiple dimensions of individuality. Other larger pieces explore the passage of time, culture, and space through the materiality of clay.
Clay Ngo’s installation Of Purses is interested in human interactions, where objects play an ironically substantial role in how humans objectify each other. From granting status to devaluing the individual from the collective, the purse is a study of a coping mechanism for the formation of the self.
Tammy Chang’s paintings Zootopia and Paris confront her narrative of assimilation as a Taiwanese-American, raising a broader issue of belonging. She challenges the authenticity of symbols of inherited meaning and identification with the dominant culture for success or safety.
Each artist explores the spectrum of the self within the collective, claiming control of their narratives.
