Gallery House is pleased to announce its new show, “Black & White Portfolios,” featuring three prominent Bay Area photographers -Judy Kramer, Dan McLean and Steven Shpall. Their fine art photography is on view at Gallery House, 320 S. California Ave., Palo Alto, CA from August 20 through September 14, 2019. The public is invited to a reception with the artists on Saturday, August 24 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. It is free to the public and a great time to share your impressions with the artists.
“Black & White Portfolios” is wonderful showcase of the “bare bones” that make great photography. Without the intrusion of color, the compositions of their photographs are extremely palpable as lines, textures, shapes, focus and light come to the fore. You will be able to explore a wide variety of subjects with Kramer’s portrayal of landscapes, McLean’s macro focus on the world and Shpall’s portraits.
Judy Kramer is a local nature photographer. She enjoys black and white landscape photography because of its emphasis on textures, lines, shapes, and patterns. Clouds are especially appealing. A past co-president of the Palo Alto Camera Club, she has shared her photographs through local exhibits in places like the Pacific Art League, Filoli, and the Los Altos Library; in books like Room to Breathe and California Native Gardening: A Month-to-Month Guide; and in publications of nonprofit organizations, including Peninsula Open Space Trust, Environmental Volunteers, California Native Plant Society, and North American Nature Photography Association. http://www.earthwitnessphoto.com/
Dan McLean finds “what needs to be photographed” in a philosophical homage to the masters and the roots of the medium when black and white was the only way one could print a photograph. For Dan, photography is about seeing, whether you “still yourself until the object of your attention affirms your presence” (Minor White) or recognize “in the fraction of a second, the significance of an event” (Henri Cartier-Bresson). Whatever the circumstance, his intent is to capture an image that will transmit to the viewer his response to the world around him whether he is in a city full of people or solitary on a mountain.
Steven Shpall has been taking photos and working in a darkroom since high school. However, with the advent of modern digital cameras and Photoshop, he started “creating” images. His inspiration often starts with a random conversation. Words turn into mental images and ideas evolve. He starts with a photograph, and then adds or moves elements to achieve the final image. His alterations of every day objects often create an abstract or surreal scene. This current show is a quite a deviation from his other work.
