Biography

Oksana Tanasiv is a Ukrainian-American contemporary artist known for her interest in conceptualism and social comment whereas her execution is far from perfunctory. Tanasiv’s concepts are carried out carefully and with effort. Using the styles, forms and materials she finds fitting for communication, she constructs series of paintings with mixed media and written description, re-contextualized appropriations, folk art designs, and installations. Tanasiv has the greatest admiration for René Magritte’s intriguing images. Although she does not incorporate any direct references to his art, she gives credit for her conceptualism to the artist. But her Code series, Tanasiv tells, have been inspired by the New York-based artist Rudolf Stingel. His installation at Palazzo Grassi, Venice, where he had canvassed the entire interior of the gallery in an exotic ottoman carpet having the patterns of the rich ancient ornaments unfolding into the atrium was transforming for her. Tanasiv’s Code series (2020 - 2021) incorporate geometric patterns representing ancestral symbols used by women master embroiderers known to sit down to work with thoughts pure, bright, and positive - to embroider their loved ones’ destinies into the fabrics. Instead, Tanasiv’s ‘vanitas’ series (2019 - 2020) perpetuate the social comment of the consumerist decade of the 80s but present its critique through humor (her re-contextualized Disney’s Scrooge series) or a form of deviation that is particularly abnormal and repulsive. (Be Blinded by Love, 2020 and Dollar Banana, 2020) By use of the technique of oil painting that imitates the silkscreen making, she alludes to the art of the 60s - art tainted with commercialism, advertising, and vulgarity of low culture. Tanasiv’s latest series Light at the End of the Tunnel, 2021 is, as expected, not desultory. The concept referencing the phrase that indicates that a long period of hardship is nearing an end touches on the events of the years 2020 – 2021. Tanasiv’s starry colorful light and music Code installations offering millions of choices in color and music – represent the much-needed glimmer of the light at the end of this tunnel of difficulty.
