The newest exhibition hosted by our "Brâncuși" Gallery builds upon a transatlantic artistic dialog between Romanian Dan Voinea and American Paul Joseph Vogeler, whose bodies of work, characterized by dynamic practices exploring the human perspective from various angles, reveal the inherently subjective and situational nature of the observed reality. The exhibition, entitled "EXPOSED", investigates the idea of exposure as a moment of crisis, examining one’s vulnerability in front of a viewer, whether an individual or a group. In a world of pervasive scrutiny and constant survey, defending privacy becomes an act of courage. The contemporary individual tries to escape total and permanent exposure and defend their intimacy against intrusion and "surveillance." Nevertheless, privacy is constantly invaded by public opinion and the media, which brutally penetrate the obscurity of one’s life. On the other hand, the tensioned relation between the collective/individual viewer and the subject of their scrutiny is in itself a source of contemplation (and meditation) as evidenced by the works of Dan Voinea and Paul Vogeler, artists who make this theme central to their practice.

The exhibition is made in collaboration with Slag Gallery.

SPECIAL EVENT/ "Meet the Artist: Paul Joseph Vogeler", Thursday, June 8, 7-9 pm

Join the event to meet the artist Paul Joseph Vogeler in a conversation with Nunu Fine Art NYC gallery director Jenny Mushkin Goldman, about Vogeler’s engagement with art history, influences, and his own singular artistic practice. This program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition "EXPOSED", an Artistic Dialog of Dan Voinea & Paul Joseph Vogeler, which investigates the idea of exposure as a moment of crisis, examining one’s vulnerability in front of a viewer, whether an individual or a group, on view at Brâncuși Gallery, through May 4 – June 23, 2023.

Artist ( Description ):

DAN VOINEA ( b. 1970, Brasov, Romania). Lives and works in Craiova, Romania. The dreamlike paintings of Romanian artist Dan Voinea exhibit the past and present in works that are at times alienating, at times disorienting, and at times foreboding but always powerfully rendered; the result is a body of work that is both ominous and nostalgic. Voinea blends traditional and contemporary practices in his emotional pieces—building scenes by staging live models, taking pictures of various of their moves and interactions, then painting using an old master’s technique. At a first glance there is an eerie tone underpinning these works, yet longer one’s gaze lingers on these ambiguous surfaces, mysterious depths and bold perspectives herald a life-affirming uplift.

PAUL JOSEPH VOGELER (b. 1982 ) was born in Columbus, Ohio. He was educated in architecture and design before finishing his degree in fine arts at the School of Visual Arts New York (SVA), graduating with Honors in 2009. He has also worked as an architect and designed his own line of modular “flat-pack” furniture. In 2010, he moved to Berlin and started the collective The New Berlin Painters in 2012, organizing and curating 3 subsequent exhibitions to critical acclaim. Paul resided in Berlin from 2010-2016 showing in Berlin, Zürich, Karlsruhe and Budapest. In 2015, he launched a second collective, the New International Society, receiving funding from the Berlin Senate Chancellery, organizing and curating exhibitions in Berlin and Detroit in association with Detroit's Museum of New Art (MONA) and Galerie Camille. In 2016, his Sugar Skull Chapel project was chosen as a finalist for the Deutsche Bank Sculpture Competition in Berlin. In 2017, Paul moved back to New York City setting up an Atelier in Brooklyn. He graduated with an MFA from Hunter College in 2021. In late 2020, Paul launched his Tarot Deck Die Sterne Über Mir made from hand cut linoleum prints. It is available as both a hand-made and digitally printed edition.
