MARGOT TOHKOU (東虹) OLEJNICZAK A MOMENT FOR YOU
November 29 - December 17, 2022

NOHO M55 Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of works by MARGOT TOHKOU OLEJNICZAK. Tohkou is an awarded Swiss-Polish artist and teacher of Japanese ink painting in Switzerland, Poland, and Germany. She got her Japanese name Tohkou (東 虹), from her master Tohun Kobayashi, in 2021. In her paintings, she applies traditional techniques passed down from master to master for hundreds of years and have never been fully described in books. Maintaining this technical treasure remains very important to her. Combining traditional techniques with a personal approach and using different tools available, she achieves a unique style with a contemporary concept of Sumi-e painting. Pure spirit and mindfulness shape her artistic landscape and world vision.

The artist regularly participates in group and individual
exhibitions in Europe, the USA, and Japan. She has been awarded several best painters prizes, among others, at the Tokyo National Art Center and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. In 2021, the painter received a special award from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and in 2022 she was given her official Japanese artist's name.
Her second solo exhibition at NOHO M55 Gallery spotlights 30 new and recent Sumi-e ink

paintings. Among the presentation's highlights is the "Introduction to the dreams." A backscattered Rorschachian image of a blue forest appears and disappears in the same brush strokes with mysterious yellow okra whirl dominating the lower part of the painting. There is a dell amid the trees securing the entrance and exit simultaneously out of the woods and dreams, giving the feeling of calm and beauty.
