Burlingame’s Peninsula Art Institute presents “Moving Forward with Unpredictable Visions,” an exhibition of paintings by resident artist, June Levin, running from September 23 through November 11
, in the Institute’s first floor gallery. There will be a reception, free to the public, from 1-4 PM on Sunday, October 6.
This exhibit of reflects June Levin’s work in a variety of media, styles and themes. Levin engages the unpredictable and unexpected in paintings that explore, not only the immediate and perceptible world, but also a world beyond that of physical representation. Her paintings may begin with a patchwork of flat acrylic, laced with a bit of gloss and glitter, on stretched canvas; she may start a landscape with transparent watercolor on paper, then carve it into abstract shapes. June’s subtle watercolor washes on Yupo paper create fascinating untamed textures. Some of her landscapes are rendered intensely rich through the use of pure oil pigments. Passion often dictates Levin’s direction, and the outcome is seldom the same.
June's artistic leanings began when, as a child, foggy San Francisco days found her staring out the window, sketching cityscapes with graphite and ink. As an adult, June studied pen and ink drawing before moving on to study life drawing and portraits. A little later, she added landscapes to her repertoire. Privileged to study with master artists, June thrived on the diversity of media, styles and techniques, as represented in this body of work.
The Peninsula Art Institute gallery is across the courtyard from the Peninsula Museum of Art’s main entrance, and is open the same hours as the museum, Wednesday through Sunday, 11 AM to 5 PM or by appointment/call the artist at 650.759.0266.
