South Bay Contemporary, SoLA Gallery presents “Cannery Row Revisited”, curated by artist and founder, Richard Stephens. Stephens has selected 25 artists who have shown regularly at Cannery Row Studios in the past. The exhibition will include painting, sculpture, photography, video and a display of memorabilia from the history of the gallery. Stephens has planned artist presentations and a catalog associated with the exhibition. Additionally, there will be a “Small Works” holiday sale of arts and crafts in support of non-profit, South Bay Contemporary.
Cannery Row Studios had a 20+ year run as an art gallery in Redondo Beach, CA from 1990 – 2010. The gallery was run and curated by artist, Richard Stephens, himself a resident in the complex of buildings. The studio complex, which is still standing, had a rich history with it beginning as a lumber mill adjacent to Redondo Harbor.
The shows at Cannery were unique in a Bohemian style, showing mainly local artists. On opening nights, the huge garage door would open up to create an indoor-outdoor environment. A magnificent eucalyptus tree became a signature element of the outdoor area, and on many a summer night, under its canopy, the artists and supporters gathered for the night. The glowing lights, the flowing wine, the art and often great music made for many memorable evenings. Richard Stephens warmly welcomed all kinds and really was the heart of this gallery.
