In Thai Mainhard’s exhibition Off the Ground vibrant, frenetic colors are collaged, painted, and drawn onto canvases that show a sense of composition and experience. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and based in Los Angeles, California, Mainhard’s personal exploration of place seeps into each of her paintings. In her newest body of work Mainhard embraces tangible objects through an exploration of the composed still life. Expressively rendered maximalist spaces are filled with swatches of bright color, checkered table clothes, and patterned vases of loosely rendered botanicals offer a lingering invitation. These composed paintings are the physical embodiment of the artists internal world and life experience, harnessing the tension between chaos and order, figurative composition, and expressive abstraction.

My work is a way of coping with extreme emotions and extreme human experiences. It's a way to alleviate and build tension at the same time. - Thai Mainhard

Brazilian born painter Thai Mainhard's intuitive and expressive abstract paintings externalize her relationship to the world we inhabit. With a practice that harnesses her own raw and immediate need to create, Mainhard’s work is fraught with tension, yet has a harmonic energy. Each abstract painting combines expressive mark making with dense blocks of color exploring the opposing forces that make up our lives. In her artistic methods, Thai Mainhard encounters human nature, exploring happiness, frustration, surprise, connection, spirituality, and overall thinking processes. Each of her works is emotional; it is a lush expression of her inner jungle. Mainhard analyzes human senses and tries to relieve unseen tension through intuitive methods, contrast color choices, catchy brushstrokes, and chaotic markings. Going through a deep internal process, the artist creates an artwork that represents human nature’s fragility and opposes it to the robustness of emotions and feelings.
