Encinitas, CA–Lux Art Institute is pleased to announce the exhibition of Angela Kallus, the fifth and final resident artist at Lux during the 2015–16 season. Kallus’ acrylic relief paintings, with their delicate and purposeful formations, display a vibrant floral aesthetic that both embraces and upends a traditional symbol of femininity and romance: the rose. Her careful placement of blooms creates a velvety texture like that of a lush garden or the frosting of an ambitious wedding cake. Indeed, to make her “sculpture paintings,” Kallus begins with cake decorating tools, which she fills with thick acrylic paint in order to form hundreds of rosettes of varying sizes. This layering and repetition results in both visual and conceptual disorientation, which further emphasizes an overall feeling of the sublime.

During her residency, Kallus plans to complete one large and four small rose “sculpture paintings.” Kallus will reside at Lux June 11–July 9 and the exhibition will run from June 11–July 30, 2016.
