Sofie Contemporary Arts in Calistoga has just opened its new exhibition, Flora, Fauna and Other-Worldly Visions: Lisa Beerntsen, John Kraft, Susan Stover, Becky Wells.  Please join us to celebrate and meet the artists at the special Artists’ Reception on Saturday, Oct. 20 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm at 1407 Lincoln Ave.  The exhibition runs through Dec. 2nd.

A luminous and color-saturated exhibition, the work is filled with real and imagined forms, ranging from synthesized realism to molecular imaginings to often familiar patterns from nature and human culture.  Each of the four North Bay area artists shown find inspiration in an intimate and interior vision of nature and in the process of creating works that reveal themselves in the making.  Added to this is the compelling awareness of the impact of human life and cultural practices on the earth and its cycles.

The beauty that surrounds us, no matter what the source or outcome, is emphasized throughout, from transcendent painted songs of lush color to geometric forms floating in unfamiliar atmospheric seas.  Images as diverse as honeycomb structures, building block notations of molecules, rusted hooks and nails, collaged bits of paper, are all unfolded to the viewer as things of wonder, worthy of one’s close attention.

For artist Becky Wells, painting “is the revealing of wholeness, moving from not knowing, to knowing.”  She focuses on our planet’s life cycles from season to season, and in her work many things occur simultaneously, in transparent layers where “dried pods form while blooms open, birds drop seeds and sprouts pop up, and it happens all at once.”  John Kraft aims for the viewer to see the world though his eyes: colorful, joyful and filled with endless possibility.  “Simply stated,” Kraft says, “the goal of my work is to make people happy.”  Susan Stover melts wax, embeds fibers, stamps, stitches and constructs surfaces.  Intrigued by how this repetitive labor can be transformational, she chooses these methods because she feels they connect her to people in other cultures who work in the same ways.  Some shapes Lisa Beerntsen uses in her imagery have been derived specifically from visible forms, and others are more intuitive or invented.  Her scientist father inspired her love of the visual language of the sciences; she quips that sometimes hexagons seem to gradually band together in the making of larger geometric forms that dominate her recent work.

Sofie Contemporary Arts exhibits inventive contemporary fine art of diverse media by artists at various stages of their careers.  All work shown is connected to California in some way and often on artists of the nearby region.  The gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday, from 12:00 to 6:00 pm or by arrangement.  For more information, please call 707.942-4231 or email gallery manager Scott Sofie (scott@sofiegallery.com) or gallery director Jan Sofie (jan@sofiegallery.com).
