Join art critic and writer Louisa Buck in a conversation with curators James Birch and Andrew Wilson on the life and exploits of artist Denis Wirth-Miller.
In the surrounding of the Landscapes and Beasts exhibition, enjoy a lively discussion evaluating Wirth-Miller’s artist output to his complex relationship with Francis Bacon. Including first-hand accounts of bad behaviour to the development and evolution of Wirth-Miller’s paintings.
James Birch is a curator and writer, who knew Denis Wirth-Miller, Richard ‘Dickie’ Chopping (Denis’s life-long partner), and Francis Bacon from a very early age. James’s recently published book ‘Francis Bacon in Moscow’ recalls the time, in 1988, when he travelled behind the Iron Curtain to Soviet Moscow with the seemingly outrageous proposal of setting up an exhibition of Francis Bacon’s paintings.
Andrew Wilson is a critic, historian and curator. Previously senior curator of modern and contemporary British art, and archives at Tate Britain (2006-21) and before that deputy editor at Art Monthly (1998-2006).
