The Mark Twain Library Series, an international online solo ceramic art exhibition by Linda Crossan opens on June 02, and will continue for two months until August 02, 2024.

Years spent painting, drawing, working with color, and creating art in other mediums are now reflected in the clay work Linda Crossan produces. She's continuously driven to explore the many creative challenges and variations in shape, texture, and surfaces ceramic art presents. Built in to the ceramic process is a moment in which an artist must let go and trust the process knowing that there will be surprises at the finale. This unexpectancy is what Linda loves to allow spaces for the clay to become what it wants to be not always what she thinks it should be.

This series of 15 pieces was created from drawings she made while sitting in Mark Twain's Hartford CT home for a special writing opportunity. They were made out of beautiful red stoneware clay and adorned with white porcelain slip. In the final firing additional colored slips were applied along with a metallic glaze highlight. She has chosen the materials to reference Mark Twain’s beautiful red brick home and the decoration to reference the white linen suite he is best known for. The metallic glaze was chosen to suggest that creativity is the spark and shine that is present in us all.

Artist ( Description ):

I have worked in clay for many years. But my career was spent in the graphics community where I worked for companies including Levi Strauss & Co, Walt Disney Studios and Hanna Barbara.  My work has appeared in galleries around the country and most recently been chosen for inclusion in the International Ceramics Artists Network 2023 calendar and I am featured in their 2023 Ceramics Monthly annual supplement Studio Talk.

The development of my work has been influenced by the natural world and my years spent in the graphics community. As a designer, illustrator, I learned how to research and immerse myself in a subject so the work I produced felt organic and natural to who I am while speaking to the concept in an informed way. As a result my process for making clay work is studied and thoughtful.

I came back to clay about 6 years ago and found it's tactile nature captured my attention like no other medium. The ability to explore shape, texture and surface is so varied and exciting I am driven to continue to explore it. Built in to the ceramic process is a moment in which an artist must let go and trust the process knowing that there will be surprises at the finale. I love the unexpected and the space I have to make for the clay to become what it wants to be not always what I think it should be.
