Is it Nature or Color?, an international online fiber art exhibition by Robin McCarthy officially opens on March 30, and continues for two months until May 30, 2025.

What do we see first—the colors that draw us in, or the natural forms that shape them? In Is it Nature or Color?, fiber artist Robin McCarthy invites us into a world where the two become inseparable, where woven textures mirror the landscapes that inspire them, and where the vibrancy of the earth transforms into art you can touch.

For over two decades, McCarthy’s career in fundraising immersed her in the dynamic ebb and flow of human emotions—hope, resilience, and change. It was only natural that when she rediscovered fiber arts, her work became a reflection of these shifting tides. Each morning, as she walks through nature’s ever-changing palette—gleaming ocean waves, sun-drenched fields, rustling leaves—she gathers the essence of color and weaves it into her work.

McCarthy’s shawls are more than fabric; they are stories spun from nature itself. The deep greens and golds echo rolling meadows at dawn, the soft blues and grays recall the hush of the sea before a storm, and the bursts of fiery reds and yellows capture the dance of autumn’s final light. Every thread, every texture, speaks of movement, warmth, and the interplay between shadow and radiance.

Her creative process is deeply intuitive. Rather than adhering to rigid color theory, she blends hues by instinct, trusting the harmony she observes in nature. She adorns her pieces with buttons, fringe, and embellishments that feel organic—like found treasures from a woodland path or a coastal shore. Each shawl is photographed in outdoor settings, bathed in natural light, reinforcing its bond with the landscape that inspired it.

Is it Nature or Color? poses a question, but offers no definitive answer—because in McCarthy’s work, they are one and the same. Color is nature, nature is color, and in the hands of an artist, both become something entirely new.
