Weppler and Mahovsky’s Solaris, created during community workshops in Sackville, and based on the theme of water as the connection between all life on earth, is a multichannel video work in which a collaboratively made ambient soundscape forms the score for the documentation of sculptures of living things made by workshop participants. The sculptures, cast of ice, dissolve into and coalesce out of a single pool of dark water, suggesting the birth of a primordial language at the same time as they take on the shimmering character of memories of a vanished world. In an accompanying video, participants are shown creating the soundtrack, exposing the delicate dynamic of collective making.
