Painting Without Brushes, an international online solo painting exhibition by Michael Syphax, opens on January 15, 2023, and will continue through February 15, 2023.
Michael's work is largely intuitive. Most of his work can be divided roughly between completely abstract pieces and desert, mountain, and jungle landscapes. In some pieces, abstraction becomes part of his landscapes. He likes the smooth, curving contours of sand dunes and the jagged lines of mountains on a far horizon. He also likes the color density of jungles and their saturation of greens. In his abstract works, he uses heavy punch of contrasting colors that make an impact on viewers.

Artist:
Michael Syphax is a graduate of the University of New Mexico (1969) with a degree in anthropology (archeology) and a minor in art (photography). He was a development officer (fund raising) for 40 years in D.C. with positions at UDC, the Smithsonian Institution, Arena Stage, among others, and finally at Washington Performing Arts where he was Director of Foundation and Government Relations upon his retirement.
Michael had been painting and drawing intermittently for most of his adult life before some artist friends encouraged him to take his work more seriously and helped him land his first gallery showing. He’s never looked back and has been exhibiting his work in galleries locally and nationally since 1994. He was a member of the co-op, The Artists’ Gallery (1996-2005), then located in Columbia, MD, and was president of that Gallery from 1997 to 1998.
He now works exclusively in colored pencil, and while his first love is abstraction, he also creates landscapes reminiscent of the mountains and deserts of the southwestern U.S. where he studied Native American archeology.
