The Maritime Collective

Categories:

Although the name insinuates artwork derived from an oceanic theme, this is far from the case. The word maritime traditionally alludes to travel by sea and the forging of new paths and connections.  The collective dons this name as a metaphor for their aesthetic exploration in the constantly shifting and ever-expanding art world. This group works together under a cooperative spirit and a common understanding that a whole can become greater than merely the sum of its parts.  It is this ideology that bridges the gap between their varied media and artistic processes.  The emerging collective is composed of eleven SFSU alumni, two current students, and one self-taught artist.  Their work ranges from painting, photography, sculpture, to installation work.

Founded by Jessy Gaumann, Kendall Berardino, Kyle Martin, and Sophie Elliott in early 2011, the Maritime Art Collective has grown over the past year, and produced several exhibitions in San Francisco in the last few months.  Maritime also has plans to open up their own gallery in the summer of 2012.  This intimate exhibit highlights each of the members’ own artwork and showcases how varying artistic interests work together in one space.

The Art Gallery at San Francisco State University is a student-run and student-funded program of the Cesar Chavez Student Center. The gallery is dedicated to bringing the visual and interdisciplinary arts to the multicultural student body at San Francisco State University through a diverse series of exhibitions of both student and non-student work.
