The Espejo Organization for the Arts presents “EOarts Performance Art Series 2016: Session 4”. The last performance art night of the series will host the works “Over” by Patrick Scheid and “Palabras de Aliento (Word of Breath)” by Kika Espejo on May 27th, 2016 at Rabbithole Projects.

“Over” is a frenetic and cyclical performance piece inspired by the writings of Jorge Luis Borges that present an anachronistic and solitary man that attempts to transcribe the few remaining tomes in his library before they rot away. While the pages crumble in his hands, he struggles to rewrite their content on new pieces of paper and attempts to bind them together. The pages keep disintegrating presenting this dissonant ritual intended to exert control but that it ultimately fail. Patrick Scheid, driven by a keen interest in testing the boundaries of artistic disciplines, continually reevaluates and forms new amalgamations of theatre, installation, and object-making. He uses literary texts as cornerstones for merging the past and present. Scheid’s work is based on “Past-ness” and the worlds that are populated with found objects and found texts that are all weighed down with their own historical baggage. San Diego-born and New York-Based artist, Patrick Scheid holds a BA in Theatre and History from Muhlenberg College. He studied Dramatic Literature at Queen Mary College, University of London. His most recent project was a 24hr endurance performance titled “A Renewed Repudiation of Time” (Ground Floor Gallery). Original works include Over and Over (Itinerant Festival), Someday Americans (Target Margin/Connelly Theater), Over (Art Connects NY), Malte's Masks (Dixon Place and Ringwood Manor), Obeisant to Anathema (Triskelion), and Zara Notes (HERE and Michael Mut Gallery).

“Palabras de Aliento (Words of Breath)” is a performance piece where the artist acts as a translator for messages of hope. Aliento means breathe in Spanish, but also encouragement and inspiration. The expression “Palabras de Aliento” is used when difficult times come and people offer and support others by loving words. In this performance, Espejo invites the audience to express their encouragement words to the world by transmitting their messages into her mouth. She takes these words and translates them into breath to then stored them in airtight containers. The member of the audience will then decide what part of the world, and what specific person if any, they want to send this unmaterial message to. After the performance, the members of the audience will be able to track their messages through a web page where they will have access to the status of their message while in transit and will be able to view the documented release of the message once it reaches its destination. Kika Espejo is multidisciplinary artists from Spain whose work explores issues of control and the role that knowledge, beliefs, and desires play in our perception and construction of meaning. With a special interest in performance and process art, Espejo’s work combines elements of photography, and video. She holds a Masters Degree in Fine Arts by the School of Visual Arts, New York. Her work has been shown in art spaces such as Centro de Historia (Zaragoza, Spain), CAVE (New York, USA), Dimensions Variable (Miami, USA), and Anthology Film Archives (New York, USA), among others. In 2011, she collaborated with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum’s "stillspotting NYC" project. In 2013, she founded The Espejo Organization for the Arts, an arts organization based in Brooklyn that gives support to international emerging and mid-career artists and creative professionals.

The Espejo Organization for the Arts is a Bushwick-based arts management organization that is committed to promote the artistic endeavors of mid-career and emerging international artists and creatives. This performance art night is part of EOarts Performance Art Series 2016, an action art program that aims to survey international performance art practices and bring them closer to the public.“Through this performance art series we aim to offer an open and inviting platform where international artists and the public can meet. We want to invite the audience to participate in and engage with performance art, understanding better what this art medium is really about: the power of symbolic action.” said Kika Espejo, founder and director of the the organization.

The Rabbithole Projects Gallery, an art space located on the waterfront of the Dumbo Arts District in Brooklyn, will host EOarts Performance Art Series 2016. “Our goal is to provide the space and community access for talented artists to share their dreams, visions, and creations with inspired attendees. This performance art series will be an unforgettable experience,” said Shawn Lyons, Owner of Rabbithole Projects. “We are incredibly excited to host such an intriguing event.”
