“Baez offers an innovative chapter in contemporary painting in ciphering her art via a modernist work of literature within a postmodernist framework.”. – Raul Zamudio, Ut Pictura Poesis: On Claudia Baez’s PAINTINGS after PROUST.

Claudia Baez’s paintings are animated by reverence for the history of Western art, rendered in a contemporary expressionistic vocabulary. Influenced by the German Expressionists Baez’s focus is on deformation, the power of subject and the life of colors. Baez engages in a conversation in paint with the work of some of the greatest artists from the past, selecting, re-creating, and adopting details from their works and ultimately creating her own voice. Baez redefines appropriation by catching the essence of the great masters and makes us see them in a new contemporary way with a twist. In Baez "re-creation’s" you can somewhat recognize the original while at the same time the new paintings take a life of their own.

The artist most recent series, ELEGIES, will be presented in December 2015, and is built around Baez’s passion for Pablo Picasso’s early works. Elegy I is a striking interpretation of La femme en Bleue, Madrid, 1901; Elegy II – is a twist on Picasso’s famous portrait of Russian dancer Olga Khokhlova (Olga in an armchair, 1917) whom he met at The Ballets Russes and who became his wife; Elegy III depicts Picasso’s portrait of his young son Paulo, The Young Bullfighter from 1925; Elegy IV is a vivid take on The Family of Saltimbanques from 1905.

Baez previous series, “Paintings after Proust”, exhibited in October 2014 at ART 3, was inspired by Marcel Proust and his monumental work, “In Search of Lost Time,” in which he mentions more than 100 artists and references a great many of their works. Paintings after Proust is currently on view in a Solo Exhibition at Carillon Gallery, Tarrant County College, Fort Worth, Texas, November 12 – December 10, 2015.
