Series of paintings created from collages of photographs that have been embellished with paint and mixed media to create two dimensional abstractions of three dimensional culverts. The culverts were removed from a logging road because they had deteriorated and collapsed beneath the road when the road became part of the Mendocino Headlands State Park. The old culverts were heaped in piles at a clearing along the road and people moved the pieces around to create sculptural forms before the whole pile was removed for safety reasons. The piles were photographed and the photographs were transformed into even more abstract collages. The resulting paintings are in a limited palette based on the colors of the deteriorated metal. The textures and patterns created have been enhanced on the surface of the paintings.
Artist:
Mina Cohen has been a member of Partners Gallery since 2001 and is also an adjunct faculty member at College of the Redwoods and Mendocino College teaching art appreciation and art history. Mina's work is most often in series and is inspired by her personal life, heritage, and travel. She travels extensively and has visited all continents with the exception of Antarctica. Her mixed media work includes all painting media and encaustic, collage, and occasionally sculpture. Texture, pattern, and color play a predominant role in all her work.
