"But, Hamid', I laughed, 'am not an Assassin at all'

'We are Assassins, all of us', he gravely replied"

Brion Gysin, The Process

To accompany the exhibition Brion Gysin: Unseen Collaborator, author and curator Mike Jay explores the sources of Gysin's fascination with the Assassin myths and their connection with hashish: weaving together the legends of Marco Polo, the true history of the original Assassin sect, the first Europeans to discover hashish and the literary drug culture of 19th century Paris.

Mike Jay has recently authored Mindcraft, a digital journey through the discovery of the unconscious, for Wellcome Collection. He reviews regularly for the London Review of Books and for Wall Street Journal. Also out in paperback is High Society, an illustrated global history of drugs. It originally accompanied the High Society exhibition, which he curated for Wellcome Collection in London 2010-2011.

A new catalogue about Brion Gysin will also be launched at this event. The exhibition Unseen Collborator will continue until the 3rd October 2015. Refreshments available.
